The whole tcp stack in FreeBSD is really QUICK.  It's scary.  I ran a 
ddos attack on a freebsd box in my lan across a 100bt switch and the 
only thing that crashed was one of my macs.(not the 2400 though)  The 
same attack brought down a server with identical hardware running the 
redhat 6.2 distro in less than 30 sec.

The firewalling in the 2.4 kernel is supposed to be powerful(it's 
stateful, ipchains is not) and easier than ipchains and ipfadm to 
setup. I believe it's called iptables.

But with hardware router prices as cheap as they now are, I'm not 
sure if it's worth the trouble unless you need security.
