...but it still won't work for the TCP/IP network he wants to connect
to (in this case to run SMB filesharing and printing over). The only
thing you can pump out the Localtalk serial port is Appletalk, and
without an upstream device to tunnel IP through (a Gatorbox or
equivalent), you're out of luck.
The original poster may want to look into a real Ethernet interface
for his Duo, ie. some sort of dock.
