YMMV.
What I have found is that a portable FireWire drive (VST) shows about 70-80% of the
performance of my internal IDE drive.
Most of my work is not disk-intensive, [ compiling and linking ], so the convenience
of being able to pick up my drive, put it in my pocket, and go home more than outweighs
the (for me, slight) loss in performance.
On the other hand, if your work is very disk intensive, my scenario won't fly.
P.S. I saw several FireWire based RAID systems at MacWorld last month.
