Further to the foregoing, Ive read with interest the
vaaried theories and comments re problems with
reversed line polarity. I havent experienced this
even though my trusty Road Warrior modem saver line
tester frequently shows a reversal (overseas). The
booklet says the modem will work under those
conditions but slower. How slow can you get with an
Apple modem firing away at 14.4? Anyway, I have never
perceived any slowdown.
A more common problem (for me) has been in Germany
where on some of their RJ-11 modular jacks, the two
outside wires carry the intelligence as opposed to the
U.S. setup where the two inside wires are hot. Thus,
no connection. I overcame this by buying a small
2-jack RJ-11 wall box and cross connecting the two
jacks internally. The line signal enters the box on
the two outside wires of one jack and departs the box
headed for the modem on the two inside wires of the
2nd jack.
Another problem arises as the smaller hotels remove
their venerable post WW-2 analog PBXs and replace
them with ISDN systems. Siemens room phones have a
slot for digital-to-analog converters but, alas, few
hoteliers have gone to the extra expense of so
equipping the phones.
And thats when you repair to the reception desk and
talk the clerk into letting you plug into his
Telefax jack. This, of course, means you have to
have a German/U.S. adapter but every Duo Road Warrior
has one of those, nicht wahr?
