Excellent suggestion, Sydney. Anyone who travels should have one of these! I
have two....one is just a straight phone cord, one plug chopped off and the
red/green wires connected to two alligator clips. Remember, the INNER two
conductors of the 4 conductor cable are the "live wires." You may need to
swap polarity to get a dial tone, as Sydney mentioned. My second cable is
actually two....it has a reversing switchbox in the middle....just switches
the polarity of the two conductors. I run into either miswired or reverse
polarity systems all over the world....some of the Argentine phone systems
also need additional loading to switch.....I've had modems which had a hard
time dialing out down there (of course, the Argentine phone system is
legandary....my distributor waited 25 YEARS for a telex line!! Written up in
the WSJ a few years ago).
Enjoy the travel.....I'm up to 60 countries so far.....tho I STILL haven't
made it to Oz yet!!
Cheers!
Andrew
