DSL won't overwhelm ethernet. 56k modem won't overwhelm your serial
port either.

For speed I like iCab (www.icab.de). Doesn't do java,though. Use IE if
you need full java support.

I like 8.1. It's fast, stable, and doesn't hog too much ram.
