Hey y'all. I did it. The USB cord is real simple: 4 wires, probably 22 gauge, a braided shield on the outside. No "Litz" wire, no nothin'. Simpler than an ethernet cross over conversion. Practically fell asleep doing it. Didn't quite make my 3 inch goal, but a 5 inch cord is much better than a 6 feet cord!
The FW cable was much more complicated, 6 wires, with 2 twisted pairs inside its own braided shielding, and a straight through pair (3 total). The whole thing is also shielded in braided wire. This one was harder to make neat-looking, but no brain surgery here either. Tried everything, and all of them work, including a USB card reader with intergral cord.
