i have the following recommendation for creating a known-good boot disk for the 2300.
1.) Download the OS8.1 Disk Tools disk from Apple at <http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/ English- North_American/Macintosh/System/Mac_OS_8.1_Update/Disk_Tools_PPC.img.bin> 2.) if you do not have it, Download Disk Copy 6.3.3 from Apple at <http://downloAd.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/ English- North_American/Macintosh/Utilities/Disk_Copy/Disk_Copy_6.3.3.smi.bin> 3.) Open the Disk Copy application and choose "Make a floppy" from one of the menus (I don't remember which) 4.) When prompted to choose a disk image file, choose the unstuffed image of the 8.1 Disk Tools disk you downloaded in step one. The disk copy app will then write the image to the floppy and eject it when done. The computer should then start up just fine. If you want to install another app for troubleshooting, just take the Drive Setup Lite and Disk First Aid apps and throw them away. Better yet, if you can spare the disk space, make a small, separate partition for booting up the computer to run utilities, etc. This is particularly helpful for optimizing the HD. Compact flash is even better if you have a 2400, but for the Duos, a separate partition is the only option I see, especially if you have a 4GB+ drive that makes SCSI disk mode unusable... Obviously, if the HDD physically craps out, then this wouldn't help any, but then again, neither would a floppy.... HTH, Tom ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
