Donald,

This sounds like a bad floppy drive. I recommend opening the dock and 
removing the drive. Then get some compressed air and blow out any dust 
bunnies, dirt, etc and see if that helps any (You could also just blow 
on it). If not, you might ask if anyone has an extra floppy they would 
part with.

You could also get an external floppy drive and floppy microdock. i 
can't imagine that these are very expensive on eBay right now.
