WOW!!

Utter tech dispair to confused jubilation in 60
seconds (the time for data input plus base station
reset)! With the WEP off (reset by the iBook) the
older Farallon card works!! Duh...not too much of a
problem with most but and epiphany for low-tech Apple
fans like me. So the range isn't that great - about
40ft down the thru the walls of two rooms- but who
cares..it works!!!!

So now the 64 bit..uh...thousand dollar question.
Without WEP what could a neighbor stumble across with
his/her computer...will my base station show up on a
"iLink" base station search? Doesn't someone still
have to have the password to access or is that just to
set the parameters of the base station?

Don't get me wrong...I'm VERY HAPPY with the set up
and the help for the list members but if I'm not going
to get 128 bit cards (I have a new boss now..ain't
marraige great?) then should I trade back to the
graphite base station and have at least some level of
WEP even though the rest of the world is pushing to
128-256? It's not like I have any sensitive stuff on
my computers but then it's not like the neighborhood
has any hackers/crackers.......does it??

I'm going back to the web site but does anyone know if
Proxim has 128 bit cards? Even if I get another third
party card I still have the problem of Proxim's PCI
card slot in my TAM (it's shaping up to be a pretty
neat legacy network...that is for not having very much
sensitive info or great stuff on it). I wonder if it
would foul everything up putting it in the Proxim PCI.
It stands to reason that if it would work in the PC
card slot of a notebook it should in the PCI
adapter...the PCI card just simulates a PC card slot.
For that matter is it cardbus enabled (whatever that
means) and will it accept other cards (with the right
driver)? Could I plug, say, a firewire or video or
USB PCcard in? This would certainly solve upgrade
problems?

Anyway I'm off to the TAM to see if I can get that to
work.

Thanks everyone...I LOVE THIS LIST!!!
Paul
