TT is actually short for "Tourist Trophy" (the famous motorcycle race on the Isle of Man). In choosing this abbreviation Audi refers to their company history: NSU and DKW merged into Audi in the early seventies, and from 67 to 72 NSU had been the manufacturer of a legendary small sports sedan called NSU 1000 TT - 1000cc 4cyl air-cooled 2carb engine, 65/75 hp, various racing versions (up to 120 hp) and winner of many races. Now this car had been baptised TT because NSU was originally a motorcycle manufacturer and they took part in the Tourist Trophy contest since 1907 and won a number of races in the fifties. So it's all about racing spirit (and the company image of course). And what's more: The NSU TT was the car I sat in taking my first driving lessons... Those were the days.
