the largest modem made for the beloved 2300c, and I own 2 and love them, is
14.4 apple fax modem or global village 19.9...that's it....the other option
is to purchase microdock which allows you to plug in another mouse or
tracking device, and also a supra express 56k modem which IS and external
unit but gets it's power from the powerbook.....clever option.
as far as swapping the trackpad for the trackball, that is FAR less difficult
than you can imagine, but if you DO attempt it, be SURE to ALWAYS unplug ever
ribbon cable you come across or risk ripping the very delicate and hard to
replace ribbon contacts.
the units are interchangable, but you also have to swap laptop covers, the
one that surrounds the keyboard I mean.

good luck, there are places online that will give you details about this
process....try O'Grady for starters. just punch that name in a good search
engine and you should find it.
