O.K., perhaps I was wrong about the type III battery (they should have since a
2300 runs very briefly on a type I). I didn't mean the user actually performed
their own upgrade either. Anyway, I do now remember that the upgrade also came
with a special video cable (I knew I was forgetting something). I don't know for
certain, but if there is no passive connector, then it must have been a hybrid
connector which the special cable accommodated. From a manufacturing standpoint,
that would have been cheaper than two different logic boards, especially when
Apple had no way to know how many passive screen owners would want the upgrade,
versus buying a new one with a color screen.
