Lou and Bill.....I think that the FCC in those days hand picked the examiners.....they were usually unsmiling and quite menacing to the young applicants. Most of the time the field office was a smelly, musty space; many cigarette smokers at that time. I dont think any of those things worked as a detriment; most passed their tests in those days.
