Paul,

The Virtual Path I referred to can be found at:

C:\Users\VE3SY\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase 2006

assuming of course that you used VE3SY as an account name when setting up Vista. If not, it will be under whatever 'user account' name you created. That may or may not be your administrator account.

The tricky part of this path is that the AppData folder is a hidden file. If you can't find it go to Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization and select Folder Options. On the View tab check 'Show hidden files and folders'. You will now be able to see the shaded outline of the AppData folder indicating it is a hidden folder.

To see how this works, start DXB and make some changes to your mdb file. Exit DXB and go to the mdb file in the Virtual Store path. Note the date and time the file was saved. Now open another Explorer window and go to your mdb file in C:\Program Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase 2006 and check the date and time stamp. It will be an older, perhaps smaller, file than the one in the Virtual Store path. Vista does not update the mdb in the Program Files path, only the one in the Virtual Store path. Same for your ref.mdb file or other mdb files you may use. The Virtual Path mdb files are the ones you want to select when Compacting your database files.

Gary

I did some QSL return updating and printing of cards today for about 90 Qs.

For gthe heck of it I just went to the default C:\Program
Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase 2006 directory and opened the VE3SY.MDB
file with ACCES and looked at several records that I had updated today. The
QSL Sent info from today's work are updated and recorded in that file.

Am I missing something? What is the path to this Virtual Store you
mentioned?

Paul,

Glad to hear you figured out the glitch and have DXB2006 going now. I
thought I'd give you a heads up about some weird behavior you will see in a couple of the Dxbutility programs when running under Vista. As you may have

discovered by now Vista doesn't make changes to your mdb file in C:\Program
Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase 2006. Instead Vista puts a copy of the
mdb file in the Virtual Store path location and changes are made to that
file. But, there is a discrepancy in the way some of the Dxbutility
programs run.

File Backup - In the box labeled "Listed Files will be copied to backup
folder" my default path name is C:\Program Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase

2006\AL9A.mdb. However, when the backup utility runs the mdb file in the
Virtual Store path is the one that gets backed up, not the one in the
Program Files path. This is exactly what should happen, but if you want to
keep a current copy of your mdb file(s) in the Program Files path you will
have to do it yourself manually.

Database - I've never had to Repair a database, but I have Compacted the
database several times. The problem is the default path in box labeled
"Select the DXbase database to compact or repair" is C:\Program
Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase 2006\AL9A.mdb. If you try to compact your

mdb file using this path, Vista will rename your actual mdb file in the
Virtual Store location to 'util.mdb' and then abort the process. This
leaves your mdb file with the wrong name and the next time you run DXB it
won't find your database file because of the name change. The only way I've

found to correct this is to first rename the util.mdb file back to your
callsign.mdb. Then go to the Database utility and click on the box with the

'...' to browse to the file you want to compact. Navigate to your mdb file
in the Virtual Store path and select that file. Now when you run the
utility it will properly compact the correct file and not tamper with the
file name. For some reason the Database utility will not retain this path
and will revert to the default Program Files path when next run. If someone

knows how to change the default path name I'd be interested in hearing about

it.

OK Jack - all working now

I was using the 2004 .REG file so I simply exported the Registery entry
from
my previous notebook as VE3SY.reg to a shared directory on my new Dell. I
ran the new .REG file and it installed itself in VISTA.

Thanks for suggesting too check the .REG file

Paul,

Are you actually using the correct registration file for DXbase 2006? We
have had reports like yours where the user says they did everything
correctly, got the correct response indicating that the registry was
updated, but still the program stayed in trial mode. In every case, it
turned out that the user was using an old registration file for the wrong
version.

I am assuming you are not using 64bit Vista.

Regards,
Jack

I have not seen any feedback relative to VISTA and DXB 2006 other than
from
Gary AL9A who has the identical Dell Notebook and reported all OK

* I was logged in as Admin
* I right clicked on the Set-Up and selected Run as Administrator
* DXB loaded and ran fine in Demo Mode
* I then ran the CALL.REG registration key and replied to the Anal
Vista warnings and it reported that the registry was updated
* Started DXB and it still indicates not registered.

Any suggestions guys? The reference in the archives to 64 bit does not
match my registry layout and so I assume it is not applicable?
