Good grief, as Charlie Brown used to say. I have always updated Dxbase annually, I felt I "owed it" to the author to support his activities. Since it was a privately held enterprise I had no way to knowing what others were doing but as I observed on this reflector at the time, it was a Bad Sign when Jack stopped having a booth and demonstrations at Dayton. The cost of the updated program was Trivial compared to the cost of almost every other station accessory and certainly Trivial compared to operating costs, postage, et al.
I'm not very active these days, however, my Dxbase2007 log looks to my eye just as it always did and my QSL card labels have the time just as they always did (I seem to recall the 'ss' thing came about from user requests involving some of the exotic modes)), but my log and QSL labels are in minutes and hours. I didn't do anything special, just imported by previous data into DBX just as I did every year until there stopped being annual updates.
