This bothers me too, so this morning I'm trying -Xincgc (incremental garbage collection) in idea.bat for launching IDEA. Seems to startup fine. Hopefully incgc will prevent the problem and not introduce any other issues.

Request from a colleague:  Is there any way to stop the (full) garbage
collection process from occurring while you are in the middle of
typing?  It is very frustrating when you're typing along, and all of a
suden everything freezes on you.  You have to stop and hope what you
have typed appears once the GC has finished, but as you notice the
freeze, you almost invariably type an
 error so you can't just keep on
typing and expect a whole paragraph of code to magically appear.

Having

the GC kick off when the keyboard has been inactive for a few seconds
would be much more manageable.
