Keeping things simple sounds good. Having grouped two-key keystrokes
also sounds good. If things get overly complex, the built-in menu
mnemonics using Alt+UnderlinedCharacter also make sense, instead
of grouped two-key keystrokes.

Hmm... I don't know which of the suggested versions I will like
most, so I agree, two default keymaps are the way to go. One for
the current default keymap, and one for the emacs style keymap.
Since two default keymaps are a little odd, maybe do away with
the default keymap altogether and save all key mappings in every
keymap, like Dan suggested earlier.
