Give these guys a break!!! This is the best IDE in the world and you're
complaining about having to read a newsgroup??
Get over it and let them build software!

I would say that I agree with Robert on this
issue. I also represent a team of at least 15 Java developers that uses
IDEA on the daily basis. Newsgroup takes away a lot of the nice features
of email. Please kindly reconsider this.

Let me preface this with the fact that I have,
personally, licensed and paid
for IntelliJ and have planned on
shifting my company's development group to
using it as well.
That said, I am not in favour of having sole access to
the kinds of
information provided for by the
existing mailing lists converted to news
groups.
Currently, the mailing list is proactive- that is, if
someone has a problem,
bug, fix, whatever I am notified
with some semblance of timeliness. A
message shows up in my in-box, is
appropriately routed automatically to an
IntelliJ folder and is flagged for
me to look at. If I am busy, this still
happens in the background. I can get
an idea of the severity of problems in
a given release by watching the
number of new mails go up. This is very
easy, and keeps me informed in a
very timely manner.
Conversely, sole access via news groups is reactive.
In order to access the
news groups I have to physically
make an effort to do so. In a worse case
scenario, I may have to wait until
I am home and able to access the news
feed. This means that there is a
good chance I won't check, simply because
the last thing I want to do when I
stop working is get on the computer yet
again.
Speaking from personal experience, I tend to review
news groups religiously
at first, then stop due to the
extra hassle and time it takes. I,
personally, have no problem keeping
all my email archived, including those
from mailing lists, and using that
as a first stop to finding answers to
problems.
Bear in mind that I am not saying that you shouldn't
have a newsgroup, only
that I would prefer that it not
replace the current mailing lists, but
rather act as a different means of
accessing the exact same information.
