of yourself so that you could be with that someone and experience true love?
Maybe the message could be positive - anything for love is good! She loved
him so much that she would change herself and sacrifice her mermaidessness so
that she could share her life with him - is that true love, self-sacrifice? I
think it is part of it - why is true love a bad message for little girls? I
think we should teach girls that true love can be fullfilling and that there
may come a time that they have to choose between careers or family lives - or
they may try to juggle both - but that they are always FREE to choose and the
choice is always theirs! The little mermaid had a choice and she choose T
love - is that so bad/well, I don't think she had much of a career under the

Anyone who has been in love knows there are sacrifices to make,
balance to be had. Where was the balance here? She gave up who she was to
be with a man. I don't think that's a very good message to little
girls...if you are in love, give up who you are to please the man...just to
keep a man? I think not! I've had to give up a man because I had to
remain true to myself..yes
a difficult choice but I choice survival of self over total
surrender of who I am. I think alot of men expect this...just as they
expect nature and Gaia to bend to them too...just as they
expect species to adapt to "their" world...I've never posted here, just
read and lurked for months but but this post really got me thinking and
wondering about Disney all over again...
The litlle mermaids whole identity was beneath the sea...maybe as a land
dweller you wouldn't appreciate that but it was who she was...her life, her
connections, her friends and family...
she lost that...very sad. Why didn't he join her under the sea, if he
loved HER so much? Yes...just a cartoon but a powerful way to "teach" our
children...
