Disney does not teach our children history - they are not always good, they
are not always bad - the previous post dealt with messages and I want to add
this for Jess's essay:
If you want your ecofeminist essay to deal with negative messages - go right
to the big bad messages: pornography, war, pollution, slavery, unfair wages,
materialism, consumerism, daycare centers - How our society puts forth
negative messages with regard to these issues and how they harm woman and the
environment. Man treating woman as second class citizens stems from a much
more rooted evil - bad values, no morals . . . Disney is just out to make a
buck, not necessary to teach our children values - but we can turn the tables
and pick out the good messages there. The bad messages come from bad adults -
more of a problem for our children then Disney flicks. Thanks! Angela

With patience and kindness, I beg to differ. Of course, Disney teaches
history with every piece of information they put out, whether it is a
cartoon or the ABC nightly news. It's all about money and control. The
winners write history. And neither the Mermaid nor Pocahantas won. One of
the reasons we need to be vigilant with what our children (yes our
daughters AND our sons) view is precisely CONTENT. And content includes
history. Let us focus on the sex and violence content (and rate programs
that way) and fail to see the historical content, the racism and sexism
and capitalism that is laced throughout the stories.
