Wendee and Ecolog:

An interesting website on this is http://www.danheller.com/model-release.html#2 (I don't know whether Heller will sue me for passing along his link or he should pay me for all the new hits and business he gets as a result of this posting [provided it gets past David]. My wife and I took one of his courses recently, and while I thought the price a bit steep (but hey, he kept the class size small and it was filled), I must say that he fulfilled or went beyond our expectations, especially in the realm of "sharing" some of his trade secrets (except what I wanted most--the secret of just how to set up a website as good as his). His website is one of the best out there, and it is packed with good, specific, info. His class was packed with pros, from as far away as Canada and South America. We had a great time, and five of my wife's pix were accepted by the client for publication (Fee: zero), but part of the class (the technical and artistic criticism alone was worth the cost), and Santa Cruz CA USA is a nice place to visit--the local campgrounds are superb (don't get trapped by the expensive, outsourced, rip-off state park reservation system, though--just get to the campground in time to get a first-come-first-served site, if the aforementioned "system" hasn't gotten them too by the time you act on this), so you can save on hotel costs if you camp. Those on big grants can stay at numerous pampering B&B's . . .

Btw, I agree completely about asking permission--if it's practical to do so--but "using" a quote or a photo with attribution (if you know who), including "Anonymous," "Anon." or even "Unknown" or "Unk" is enough to maintain honesty with credit and responsibility in the right place is the socially responsible thing to do. The CULTURAL thing to do is to be deceptive and find a loophole in the LAW (an indicator that the social contract has been replaced by "fine print" and social mores have been codified into a tool for manipulation) to render a lie as an OBJECTIVE "truth." However here's an example of how much trouble you can get into when you even inadvertently buck the "LEGAL" system: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-lopez13-2009may13,0,3828584.column Such complexities in our tangled cultural web are generically from the same "place" as the original discussion about "open access" (social-voluntary) or "intellectual imperialism" (cultural-coercive) options for behavior on individual and population scales.

It's always best to ask permission. Most folks don't mind letting you use it
especially for educational purposes and I've found they appreciate being
asked. I am curious where the law stands on this in terms of fair use though
- as a photographer and as someone who makes my own presentations regularly!
Hmm I'll have to ask some photographer colleagues...

What are your thoughts on using a copyrighted image in a presentation at a
meeting? No copies are distributed, but merely displayed.

Thanks, Tom
