I'm not surprised by the overwhelming response and ongoing debate on: "looking
for mapping tools". If you go back to the orginal message you'll find the
reason, a genuine request: "..I'm trying to find a non expensive tool that
could be used instead of Mercator to do our mapping...". Judging by the
responses, I bet this is not the only one looking for such a tool!
For all its flaws, Mercator did offer many excellent and innovative features
including the ability to develop and test maps on a local PC, then deploy them
in any run platform, clearly separating EDI development and production tasks.
This one-size-fits all architecture makes EDI mapping simpler to learn, deploy,
and migrate. And yes, as someone pointed out already Mercator was pricey, but
ir was highly successful and still much cheaper that most of its comparable
competitors.
So the question is a valid one: Is there a "non-expensive mapping tool" out
there that can replace all or most of the functionality of Mercator ? I asked
myself that very same question 3 years ago. Since we found none, we set out to
develop one, a cheaper and improved one that is.
Today we havw about 12 installs, mostly experimental, but the results are
great. It is a new mapping tool for PC and Linux GUIs, accompanied by a
cross-platform translation engine. The product is called Zipper. I'd like to
take advange of the ongoing debate to invite any interested party including
users and consultants to test drive our new product in exchange for any
possitive or negative feedback that might help us better position and improve
our product.
