FTP is increasingly popular as an alternative to Vans, and we have had a
lot of experience using it. Generally the hub provides an FTP server,
and the spokes are expected to access it. If you are running the server
it is basically a local network file management issue. If you are the
spoke then you may well have several servers which you need to access.
Although the FTP transfer itself is standardised, the local housekeeping
surrounding it is not. There are differing requirements for file naming
and renaming, directories to be used, and semaphores and
acknowledgements. The only effective way we have found to manage this is
to associate an FTP script with each partner/document combination which
deals with the particular requirements for that type of transfer.
For our own software, which has its own FTP capability, the scripts are
managed as part of the normal partner and document profiling. It is
however possible to use the approach with, for example, the standard
Windows FTP client, with a utility to examine the logs to determine the
status and, occasionally, a little ingenuity.
If you are running the FTP server then you can dictate the immediate
housekeeping required.
