I was aware of it as well as your frustration which triggered it.

That's true. The good news about perception is that it can be changed.

I agree that it is an uphill battle to change that. But if users feel  
they don't want to pay for overpriced products then they need to to  
accept alternatives and champion their acceptance.

Opportunities for others to step in and help :-)

As I said there are a few Open-Source developers that may want to  
start thinking about it.

When I was involved testing with DGI our AS* product was online 24/7  
to allow the other participants to exchange test data. Your  
suggestion is not unreasonable. I know that is wishful thinking but  
maybe their is a vendor who will take the bait and start a trend.
