Mapping changes data in a documented, reproducible manner, and leaves an
audit trail. It transforms the data according to a set of business rules,
which [hopefully] have been tested and proved by the custodians of the data.
However, when the EDI people change the contents of the data we run the risk
of changing the meaning. Example: Change * to + to allow for use of * as a
delimiter. In the NTE segment, the phrase: formula for critical part is A *
B / C becomes A + B / C. I don't want to be responsible for that change.

I used to work for a company that insisted the element separators be
asterisks (*). They paid the VAN to change inbound docs to use the *, which
meant that any MSG that said * * * RUSH * * * bombed.

Note: The * is also known as the Nathan Hale operator, after the American
patriot who lamented that he had but one asterisk for his country.

Subject: RE: [EDI-L] delimiters issues

We were discussing a similar problem the other day.
How do folks feel about changing the data? (inbound or outbound)
I am concerned about controllership/SOX/audit/finger-pointing issues
and always try NOT to change the data! (which of course, ignores the
inherent change-ness
of mapping)
