And that, Leah, is why it is important to have EDI professionals set up the EDI operation for a company that is new to EDI. You know it, and now we all do.
Mr/s Executive: EDI will save you money, if you do it right. EDI will improve your business processes, if you don't screw it up. To do it right, make certain you have somebody guiding your implementation who knows EDI. Don't ship it off to Timbuktu, just because they will do it for $2.45 per hour. Don't send your administrative assistant to mapping class. It will cost you hour-by-hour, day-by-day, year-by-year as long as you scrimp. Penny wise, pound foolish. Bring in expertise before you spend a dime on software or hardware, and you will save yourself a lot of headaches, and a lot of cash. Bring in expertise now if you have none, regardless you are in the system life-cycle. I am not certain anybody will read this and change their behavior, much less call me for help, but it felt good to get it off my chest. Note that I made this <SALES> for those list police who can't stand it if somebody offers an opinion or solution where there is the slightest possibility of personal gain without it. VANs will change them with regularity, they do not exist in the actual data files, only in the translated EDI data, they can even be non-printable and they can be changed in any decent translator without regard to the "data" at all, in fact, my guess is this whole thing started because the EDI was not set up in conjunction with the business who would have said, if asked, "oh, yeah, we use * in our files all the time". Oh, if only someone had an opinion on this.
