Patrice and all,

There's a bit of flawed logic in this question and in many of the
answers given so far...

And it's based upon the original question - the cost PER MESSAGE.

The problem in this logic is that all messages are of different
sizes - some are much bigger and some are much smaller.

For example, let's say I send out an 850 PO for 1 line item, but
it's for 15,000 units... It's going to be a small and simple
message that is being sent.

But then I get back the 856 ASN from the vendor - and they ship 10
units per carton. So I'm going to get 1500 cases. that ASN will be
huge when it comes to characters, but it's still just "a message".

And then the 810 Invoice will be another small message.

Can you truly put a value - the SAME value - on each of those
messages? Not so much, no.

Think of it in the ways of the 'Net. You've got an e-mail you're
sending and you've got a program you're downloading. Both
are "single items" - but at a few hundred kilobytes, that e-mail is
small and quick. But at a few hundred thousand kilobytes, that
program is HUGE. The program download will use up a lot of your
bandwidth or (if applicable) your daily limit of data being sent or
received. If you're still using dial-up, think of how long that
download will take vs. the relatively short time for the e-mail.

Ask this question - of yourselves or of others - would you consider
a flat fee per document to be a good value, given the widely varied
sizes of documents? Should you pay the same amount of insurance on
a $200,000 Rolls Royce that you'd pay on a $15,000 Toyota Yaris (or
other inexpensive car)...? I doubt you would - because you know it
costs a LOT more to replace that Rolls (or get parts for it!) than
it would to replace parts (or the car!) on the Yaris.

And if you re-ask the question - but take it to the "decent
price/cost per KC for EDI messages" - well, then, that's a topic
that has been posted many times - and beaten just about to death! -
on this forum (and any others revolving around the concepts of
EDI)...

Just My thoughts
