Richard, I wish there was a good reason, but it has nothing to do with technical reasons or common sense. I'm afraid it's just corporate decision making and group-think.
I hope IBM doesn't mess with Sterling too much. It's been my contention that in recent years the Sterling brand has been held up by essentially the mapper and their VAN service. We all know the story with the latter since AS2 started rolling and if IBM messes up the former...ugh. Because of this WebSphere issue, I have been dealing with I have been looking into the WebSphere Message Broker to learn more about it. It has a visual style mapper and then a background code E-SQL that can be used instead of the visual mapper. Both seem about 10 years behind the current offerings in the EDI world.
