Give it 12-18 months (or less) and I'm sure you will (start to) see production consolidation and end of life for others. It doesn't make financial sense to IBM to continue to support and try to sell and counter sell so many competing products. IBM shareholders will be looking to regain their financial 'footing' after such a large financial commitment and one of the ways to do this is by reducing the support & sales force needs for such a broad range of products. Will list some of them here as many people seem to think of WebSphere only as WebSphere Application server or MQ. 1) WTX - WebSphere Transformation Extender ( this is the erstwhile Mercator product which I don't think anybody can rubbish as a lightweight - it has significant market share in banking, insurance and HIPAA. ) 2) WPG- WebSphere Partner Gateway ( this is primarily a gateway product for FTP, HTTP. HTTPS, AS2 etc and besides the communication gateway also has a data transformation engine/ mapper and supports Rosetta Net, HIPAA, EDIFACT, ANSI X12 etc and they certify with Drummond group regularly for AS2 etc). 3) WMB-WebSphere Message Broker ( this is again a hub and spoke architecture solution that connects into MQ series for industrial strength messaging - data transformation of the type that an EDI translator would do is not it's strength and it does not have the EDI standards built in etc. So it is primarily for SOA,BPM and Connectivity ) 4) WMQ- WebSphere MQ- this has an installed base of more than 500,000+ installations and is prevalent in many industries like Banking, Customs Transactions and many Government transactions. 5) WMQFTE- MQ File Transfer Edition- bullet proof file transfer capabilities with all the benefits of the MQ product and the simplicity of MQ. 6) WPS- WebSphere Process Server - ( as the name suggests it can orchestrate a process within an Enterprise) 7) WebSphere ESB- Enterprise Service Bus - this is a backbone that that can manage a whole enterprise workflow and SOA 8) Datapower- this is a "In a box" solution that includes hardware and software bundled in and is getting fairly popular There are more than 1000+ products under the WebSphere umbrella and there could be some consolidation and rationalization with the addition of the Gentran Portfolio but without doubt it will be a portfolio of products that will be a force to reckon with in the Mid to Large sized Enterprise Market for Data Transformation and EDI. Also there are many reasons in an enterprise architecture to have middleware between SAP and the EDI translator. Most EDI translators are not very BPM( Business Process Management) or SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) friendly( at least at the moment) and that's one reason middleware especially some of the more sophisticated ones exist. I'm afraid it's just corporate decision making and group-think. I hope IBM doesn't mess with Sterling too much. It's been my contention that in recent years the Sterling brand has been held up by essentially the mapper and their VAN service. We all know the story with the latter since AS2 started rolling and if IBM messes up the former...ugh. Because of this WebSphere issue, I have been dealing with I have been looking into the WebSphere Message Broker to learn more about it. It has a visual style mapper and then a background code E-SQL that can be used instead of the visual mapper. Both seem about 10 years behind the current offerings in the EDI world.
