Dennis suggested reasons in answer to my question regarding students who are allowed to move beyond certain points without help from their school.
I think that all of Dennis' suggestions are probabily true but the one that should never be true is the one he listed as number 4. "4. mechanisms for monitoring student progress and what faculty/programs insist students do have declined over the years" I feel that no matter what the other points offered by Dennis tend to show, this item is the one that can and must be controlled by the faculty members themselves. I assume all of them have their advanced degrees. Lowering the standard for any single student lowers the value of their own degree. No faculty member (and I have taught at four universities), should ever give into to this situation. Again, I guess I'm really old fashioned. GOD BLESS AMERICA Dr. Robert C.
