It's hard to determine what competitive advantage Sun has. Personally I
think all the vendors differentiate themselves well, each offering products
for a particular niche. BEA Weblogic Enterprise for example, will integrate
extremely well into environments that leverage TUXEDO. Oracle8i is useful
for environments where Oracle data is used, or when data access needs to be
particularly fast. Gemstone provides and advantage for clients that wish to
leverage an OO database. There are several other products that each have
their own advantages.

Sun new server, from what I've heard, is very scalable, but this doesn't
guaranty it the top position. Other considerations like platforms supported,
legacy system integration, persistence support will also come into to play.

Subject: Sun's offerings

Hi everybody,
with so much active discussions from vendors whose name I can't even
pronounce (sorry, my fault!) I can help but wonder what all these guys
will do with SUN coming into this field so strongly. They have the spec
and they have products implementing this spec - how very convenient!!
I see a major conflict of interest - which will effect just about
everybody else. Even the gorillas of this area ala BEA.
I did not see any discussion about these issues. Hope I have not stirred
a hornet's nest - but somebody has to do it :-).
