Mike, a reasonable concern. I have had several discussions with Sun about
this over the years and they have a pretty good set of responses:

1. It is to their advantage that penetration of this market be wide and
deep and rapid. This requires a lot of people selling at various levels.
Whether it is IBM in the glass house or BEA in the treehouse, penetration
and acceptance is what they are after.

2. They don't always have the best product. As referenced elsewhere, their
are tuxedo, ODB, Oralce, DB2 IMS, etc. solutions that need to be built. Sun
can't do it all.. look how frustrated many of us are by their pace of
implementation of the EJB spec.

3. They are market driven. The recent MS case has put the fear of god into
many vendors with regard to how they handle intellectual property and market
segment dominance.

4. They are partner driven. Grudgingly, they have made changes to
licensure models, etc. based on partner feedback (read "threats")

So, we need to watch Sun and make sure we do not replace one dictator with
another.
