Are you trying with the compuyter power supply plugged in? If not, try it. Your computer's USB port may be marginal on battery power.
Also, try a USB-serial adapter with FTDI chipset. These seem to be the most easily used. Also try to find a computer with a serial port to try. maybe another laptop.
