Another thing to try is to uninstall the K3 Utility and install it again fresh from the Elecraft web site.
Are you by chance moving the USB to serial adapter around to different USB connectors on your computer? That can change the port address. Try all the port addresses shown in the K3 Utility Port tab's pull-down tab of available ports. If not, try it. Your computer's USB port may be marginal on battery power. Also, try a USB-serial adapter with FTDI chipset. These seem to be the most easily used. Also try to find a computer with a serial port to try. maybe another laptop.
