Varying lengths of dashes?
I surely don't remember that
when I practiced American Morse
circa 1952.

I just wanted to keep the bug
operation, including the ability to send American Morse (which keyers
don't
allow because it requires using varying lengths of dashes) when using
paddles portable in the field.
