Chip, I feel your pain. My version 2.0.3 of Emailer isn't crashing and I'm still doing most of my work in OS9x but just ordered a new 1.25GHz G4 tower and I suspect I shall be moving more of my work to OSX soon.
Look at Mailsmith for an OSX native email client (also can be used in OS9x).
