Nope... think of Classic as "Virtual PC for the Mac OS", because that is
really what it is. Classic apps really have NO way to run in OS X...
totally different OS. So Apple came up with "Classic" which is really
just a virtual Mac running OS 9. Down to the point that when Classic
starts up, you can watch the entire boot process go by.. happy mac and
all.

What Apple is doing is keeping you from having the option of rebooting
into OS 9 only. They are going to set their hardware so that it requires
OS X to operate. (much like many of the other macs require a certain OS
version to boot).

Although I have NO inside information, I can draw the educated conclusion
that their decision to do this was for two reasons.

1: Tell the few companies that have not yet ported to OS X (ehhem...
QUARK!) to either port, or take a hike (I think AppleLinks said it better
with "Port or get off the pot").

and 2: By moving to OS X only, they free themselves from the hardware
constraints of OS 9. OS X is a MUCH more portable OS when it comes to
hardware support. If they can remove the need to support OS 9 complient
hardware designs, they free themselves to start using totally different
hardware structures (Intel based CPUs for instance).

As much as people like to bitch about the OS X only booting... this day
was coming, and Apple DID wait two years before doing it. Vendors that
haven't updated their software in two years to support OS X are unlikely
to bother to do so until they are forced to do it. And if they aren't
going to bother at all... the get the hell out of the market and let
someone else move in.
