I can agree that they can clutter the interface - 
I do use a few of them myself - the one primary use I have for them is 
for acces to remote volumes - I have 2 tabs which (combined contain about 
40 items) have aliases to various remote volumes I have (or will need) to 
visit.  This makes moving files to these locations very easy, as I can 
drag n drop the file(s) on the volume alias, enter the password and 
forget about it.  

As a note, though - the OS does not populate a selection of tabbed 
folders FOR ME, unlike the toolbar.  I use them as a matter of user 
choice, unlike the dock which is forced upon me.

effectively this is an 'opt in' technology rather than an 'opt out', or 
'no out' technology.
