No, OS X didn't throw them out; Apple just couldn't get them all in, 
given the time constraints they had in getting the OS to market.

Some of them have been late getting in (spring-loaded folders, for 
example) and some have been superseded by superior interface paradigms.

When OS X first appeared, "Tog" complained about the too-realistic 
looking icons, saying that original research for the original Mac 
showed that stylized icons were more recognizable and easier to 
identify.  That's true, but the original Mac was only black and white 
(no grey, let alone color) with a much lower resolution.  The original 
research was not applicable to the later generation Macs.

Maybe not everything about OS X is better than predecessors, but I 
believe that overall, it is a much better user environment.  Otherwise, 
I'd still be using OS 9.
