If not in fact, then for all practical purposes. The Index is constructed from information in the DB. If you want to preserve your mail and still "play" with it, I would suggest you make a copy of the Mail folder and put it in a safe place. When you are done "playing" you can replace the messed up Mail folder with the saved one and you are back to square one.
