I agree about "Mac is smart" and suggest that simply unmounting a HD partition doesn't work. Under OS 9 I had a Mac access an application that was on a HD partition I had dismounted as evidenced by it not being present on the desktop.
Since then, I have relied on nothing less than an "air barrier" which is to say being assured there is no possible way a connection can be made from the computer to the file or application. IOW, they simply are not connected. Of course, "air barrier" is no longer a good term if Airport is in the picture.
