My best guess: when you thought you were opening the originals, you were
really opening the files you changed. Changing one set of files just
doesn't change another set. Did you use the F5 key to specify the
location of the Mail and Index files when you started up the second time?
If not, it would use the ones used last. Did you Stuff the files you
experimented on, to make sure they couldn't be used?
