I generally keep Base64 as my default and change it manually when needed. 

Of course, you have to go with what works best for you and if you're 
running into problems, let that be your guide. Normally your ISP won't 
encode your mail, unless you're using AOL or Compuserve.

I'm not very familiar with .xml. I believe if you open in Word, you won't 
see the codes, as with html, if you use the "Online Layout" view.
