As mentioned, XML is beyond me, but when I work with html files, I frequently use Tex-Edit, which has a script that lets me colorize the tags, making it easier to read the text. It's important to see them so you can make sure they're in the right place (i.e. that you will be bolding the right word in translation, for example), that you don't delete anything, or if there's anything you may need to change or alert the client about. When finished, I also use the command to "Stupify quotes" as curly quotes sometimes sneak in - also upper ASCII. I expect BBEdit also has these features. And then I always check it in a browser to make sure everything is how it should be. There may be graphics that are not included, but I can still see whether they're in the right place.
