[EMAIL PROTECTED] said a lot of confusing stuff for some obscure reason:

>This doesn't make sense. On OS 9, the Desktop *IS* just the Desktop and
>you DON'T have to open a window to see it.

>Correction: Desktop "folder". It shows on the desktop, but not in the
>desktop folder....wonder why?
You're not making any sense. Which desktop folder? The OS 9 alias or the
personal desktop folder that keeps the stuff on the desktop? Send a
screen dump.
You're also wrong. In OS 9 the desktop is a folder, only hidden. There
are no drive icons in it. Why you expect it to do that in OS X is beyond
me.

>I understand this but this it is not necessary, only because of what they
>have done to the system.
It's a better solution, more fit to real life. You also do not understand
this. That's crystal clear. Or if you do understand, you are hiding it
very well. ;) Actually, I think this is at the heart of the problem. You
seem to want to understand effortlessly, because OS 9 knowledge was
painless. OS X is harder, but it is understandable. You also seem to be
pretending you do understand everything and what you don't is Apples
fault. Just admit to yourself at least, that you don't understand
everything about OS X and that you need to learn if you ever will. That
could be a healthy step, while you remain an OS 9 user for yet some time.
Take the time you need.

>All my 12 machines have OS 9 on them and it is comforting to go back
>after messing with that, for sure.
Yeah right. It's so nice to share all your work files with 20 other
people and risk them deleting important files. From your desktop for
instance.

>Let me be root and get it over with, is what I say.
You can be root and auto log in. That'll may be dangerous though for
several reasons. I'd suggest you auto login as admin instead. It's very
painless once you've set it up. This is the way I use my Macs. I won't
tell you how to do it. If you want to use OS X, you should get "Mac OS X
Bible" or why not "the little Mac OS X book" by Robin Williams. Probably
the latter will fit you well and you won't feel so bewildered after you
have read that.

And if you want to use OS 9 on that Emac, remove the folders
"Applications" (copy apps you need first), "System", "Library" and the
files "Mach", "Mach.sym" and the other symfiles in the root. Then move
your user document folder to the root, copy the rest of the content you
need from your home folder and delete it. Done!

This won't prevent it from booting into OS 9, provided it boots into OS 9
now and not into classic. As far as I know the latest Apple CDs are
9.2.2? Why don't you just call Apple and demand a bootable, installable
9.2.2 CD for your Emac? If they refuse, escalate all the way up to Steve,
if you have to. Just be polite, don't bitch about OS X and make sure they
understand you won't take no as an answer. Say that you need OS 9 for
some specific apps not working right in OS X or whatever. Apple needs to
be kicked around once in a while. I do it from time to time. It works as
long as you're polite and stubborn.

Ok, I hope that helps. However, any more information incomplete questions
from you will be ignored. All "truths" about OS X 10.2.3, not backed up
by repeatable real life references, will be regarded as trolling and
handled as such.
