I check the X-mailer header for platform clues and send Base 64 to PC 
users and binhex to Mac users. Or I just ask.
If I need to send a file to many people I put it in 2 versions, One Zip 
and one binhexed stuffit archive on a ftp server and post the URL. 

I haven't received any report about "unopenable files" since I started 
this scheme.
