No. 6400: 40 MHz motherboard with basic video 6500: 50 MHz motherboard with onboard ATI accelerated video, and a stronger power supply Both had problems with G3 upgrades, yet the 6400 is much easier to live with: those 50 MHz motherboards have timing problems with fast processors, disks, PCI cards, and the ATI onboard video causes driver conflicts with some newer ATI cards. Some versions of the Sonnet extension had problems but the hardware is stable. Mine often stays up for weeks, running mainly emailer and iCab for my girlfriend while I'm away (G3/300 overclocked to 320 via software, Mac OS 8.6). >it might be interesting to give it a whirl in the >6500 again but not screw the board back into place Common problems with G3 upgrades in 6400/6500 : - Sonnet card or extension freeze startup (I had too few startup problems to confirm that, but some versions of the extension were indeed bad; I changed the type of the Crescendo extension to "scri" to make it load before normal extensions and speed up the entire startup process) - sound problems during disk access (solutions may include a timing extension that slows down fast IDE disk, having a volume mounted on the SCSI chain -- a hard drive in the upper bay or a CD in the drive, or even some USB stuff) - the Geoport modem and Apple Telecom software don't work - the screws (I never experienced that but it was confirmed) - it's too fast so you need better video, a Farallon CommSlot II fast ethernet card, firewire and usb ;-) - then some hardware require system updates, like 9.2 which won't install without a hack >I moved to a 9600 a few weeks ago Spooky. A few weeks ago I met a collector with a duplicate 9600 and no 6400. You bet: he gave me a 9600 in exchange for my 6400 in it's original state, I'll downgrade it when I get a chance, reinstall the Geoport modem and Avid Cinema card... I'll miss it. Let's make sure we're not the same person. I'm currently using Emailer and wearing a black polo shirt. ---- VRic ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe send a mail message with a SUBJECT line of "unsubscribe" to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
