I want to thank all of you who responded to my dilemma. This list is a great resource. I got pointers to two Apple tech discussions about the Geoport, and what to remove and how, and numerous other suggestions.
One of them was to zap the PRAM. I rarely do this - voodoo, y'know! But it beat going around the back of the tower one more time, and opening the back, etc., etc. So I zapped, and the modem port started behaving normally! I'm glad the easy fix worked!!
