If you recall from your high school trig class, or philosophy logic
class, if one happened to take one along the line, or higher math
classes, there is a concept of "elegance" to describe a well-crafted
proof, as opposed to a clunky proof, both proofs getting the job done.
If you ever use Windows, you can muddle through pretty well because it is
a knock-off of the Mac OS; however, you'll think it "clunky" as opposed
to your MacOS, which will be "elelgant" in comparison, in the ways it
does whatever it happens to be doing..

Another reason for the ascendancy of Microsoft was the marketing
decisions made by Apple along the line. Especially in light of the
equivalent decisions made by IBM, given their size and reputation, it is
arguable as to whether Apple made the correct marketing decisions if they
wanted to secure position in the business world. Since "no one ever got
fired for choosing an IBM product," that is a powerful incentive for
purchasing decisions by purchasing departments, which Apple had to find a
way to combat.

Another problem is that a lot of people don't appreciate or don't know
how to ascertain what is the better product, especially in America where
the dominant value judgment "algorithm" is made on a bare price basis:
cheaper is "better," unless the item has snob appeal, in which case
"more expensive" is "better," all this without regard to judgment on the
"true value."
